Archive for the ‘Research/Tidbits’ Category

I’d be happy to hear from anyone who would be interested in working on the OP magazine archives with me. I’m just a little short on time right now, having a few balls in the air. And really, things are just so much more fun when you’re working with others!

Realistically, if I go it alone, the process will need to wait until next summer, or at least it looks that way at this point. I would love to hear from anyone wishing to collaborate.

Must have an interest in the independent radio and DIY scenes of the late 70s and early 80s!

Due to the kindness of strangers, it would appear that I’ll be able to archive all of the OPs. It will still be a while before they’re all posted for public consumption but there will be no missing issues.

More on the process of archiving these darn things…

In the interest of longer term efficiency on my part, and accessibility on the part of the reader/researcher, it makes the most sense to build a website to house the digital copies of the OPs rather than provide written run-downs of them and/or post them here blog-style.

The digitization of the tabloid-sized formatted issues is near completion but I’m still waiting for the delivery of one issue (ho-hum) and have yet to track down a copy of “E.” That might take months to find so the full run, or at least the newsprint issues, will not be available anytime soon.  But…with the exception of the yet-to-find “E,” the other tabloid print pages will be posted to the web in the upcoming months. Things would be moving faster but this is a time-consuming endeavor for someone still figuring out the website-building ropes!

It’s getting done but it’s a bit of a grind.

I’m trying this layout out but before making a separate blog for OP–Chenille Tartar will be the test run location for the time being. I’ve also opted out of making full copies of any issues available online but will catalog the contents of each issue in written text format. That should make certain subjects more searchable too!

This format is subject to change. Here are the first two pages (well, the front cover and page 1, the Table of Contents) of “A”. This will be a lengthy project but hopefully something that will be of use for anyone interested. Pages will probably be posted 2 or 3 at a time (for now, hopefully more once all of the scanning is done) and will not contain full texts but page contents (topics of articles, ads, etc.). This really just seems like the best way to proceed at this point. I suppose I could not scan the collection but then the pages would become further damaged. They’re already very brittle.

If anyone is interested in contacting me for more information please feel free to do so via the comments for now. There seem to be issues with the contact form box. Hopefully that will sort itself out.

I hope that you enjoy the images that will be provided with each post.

Ashgate’s collection of essays on debut albums “Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself”  (edited by George Plasketes) finally came in the mail. !!! While I’ve been busy with diss work and have had to put just about everything else on hold because of it I’ve had a chance to glance at my essay “Ready for the House: Jandek’s Inert Unveiling” and some of the others in the collection as well. I’m looking forward to having the chance to read more. I’m also looking forward to having some *time* to read.

George, if you’re reading this, thanks for putting the collection together!

And now…back to the dissertation!

Cover of "Ready for the House"

Cover of Ready for the House

I received an email today regarding a book chapter I wrote on Jandek’s Ready for the House. Ashgate Press will be mailing me a copy of the book within the next month or so.

Reminder to self: you are not like Woody Allen (who had at one time said that he won’t watch his own films (unlike Tom Cruise–this is a presumption. Sue me)). You will crack the spine. You will read the book. You will re-read the chapter after not having set eyes on it for nearly a year. Chewing gum and toothpicks should do the trick if needed.

On a different note, I’d like to offer a  big fat, heart-felt thank you to anyone and everyone who has helped make this chapter happen. It is all the better for your much appreciated contributions and guidance.

And, to Mr. Jandek, thanks for the music.

Somebody told me you could make a killing analyzing music most people feel is sonic nonsense/noise/bad/garbage.

OK, OK, just joking…

But wait; hey, who determines badness anyway?  I mean, I’ve never thought of Jandek as bad despite the sometimes lobotomizing effect produced by repeatedly listenings of the same eight second snippet for the purpose of transcription.

Some scratch notes for you…

More Thoughts on  “The Number One’s at One”

A Horse with No Name” was a number one hit on the pop charts. It knocked Neil Young‘s “Heart of Gold” out of the number one slot in 1972. I suppose it’s not really that surprising.

“Gee, this guy’s voice is really familiar—hey, isn’t he the guy who did “Heart of Gold?””

“No. He’s not. But perhaps Dewey Bunnell could give you a lesson on how to cash in on someone else’s sound.”

On cashing in on another artist’s sound, sometimes it’s more of an homage than a rip-off. Listen to Big Mama Thornton‘s “Hound Dog” (or other Leiber and Stoller tunes for that matter) and compare it/them to so much of Tom Waits‘ recorded works. The resemblance is uncanny.

This came in the mail today. Yay!

2012-12-13 20.21.03

I reckon that this is where my appreciation from badness came from. I can pin it down to the summer of 1995. I have no idea who I was with at the time or what I was doing but I do know that it was picked up at the El Mocombo in Toronto at some event: a copy of Crad Kilodney’s (Ed) Second Charnel House Anthology of Bad Poetry. I won it. For doing something I can’t recall. The book came out at parties for entertainment. It moved with me from apartment to apartment.  And then someone borrowed it and it was gone. Forever.

I’ve recently been soul-searching, trying to figure out my appreciation for ‘other’ things and it all came back to that book. I couldn’t remember if it was the second or first anthology but  upon seeing  the first in person I now realize that it was the second that I had won.

“Won’t you please post an excerpt?”

No, no, you can’t ask that. I can’t do that?!.

OK. Maybe I can.

Here is an excerpt from an unknown author (figured that was fair enough).
